Recap – National Labor Union Conference 2019

Calibre CPA Group recently hosted its 8th Annual National Labor Union Conference at the Capital Hilton in Washington, DC. Speakers shared their knowledge about how leaders and financial professionals from a wide array of labor unions can improve the efficiency of their organizations by preparing for the latest regulatory policy changes. Attendees participated in networking, watched presentations, asked questions and had the opportunity to earn CPE credits. Calibre Managing Partner James Kokolas served as emcee, providing remarks throughout the program and bringing the event to a close.

Keynote speaker Dr. John Lund, founder and principal at Pacific Northwest Labor Research, discussed key Department of Labor (DOL) policies and gave a comprehensive overview of the Compliance Audit Program (CAP) and International Compliance Audit Program (I-CAP). Dr. Lund illuminated various facets of the auditing process for each program and explored many samples of reporting violations from audit closing letters to guide attendees on how to avoid common violations. He also touched on breaking news regarding the return of Form T-1 and its potential impact within the labor community.

Andrew Moss, regional director of strategic initiatives at Gallagher, presented updates on the latest fraud and cyber threats, advising on how to prevent and respond to attacks in today’s information superhighway. Mr. Moss utilized his expertise in cyber liability to inform his presentation and highlighted new and emerging threats that labor unions should be aware of so they can protect their organizations.

Mary Margaret Prange, audit partner at Calibre CPA Group, outlined the latest Accounting  Standards Updates that impact labor unions. Ms. Prange then delved into changes coming down the pike in financial reporting, providing specific examples from the technical literature.

For the final presentation, Scott Hallberg, CPA and senior director at Calibre CPA Group, discussed hot topics in taxes. Mr. Hallberg shared his extensive dealings with the DOL and IRS in the examination of various organizations and funds, which he included in his presentation. Mr. Hallberg briefed the crowd on changes to forms 990, 990-T, 5550, and DC personal property tax returns.

Before concluding, James E. Gomes, audit partner at Calibre CPA Group, joined Dr. Lund and Mr. Hallberg on an interactive panel where they answered audience questions.
