Q&A with John Lund
John Lund, Founder and Principal at Pacific Northwest Labor Research LLC, shared his thoughts on the current national labor landscape and what attendees can expect from his keynote presentation.
What do you think is the most important issue or biggest challenge facing national labor unions today?
The number of unions filing Labor Management reports is rapidly shrinking. The resulting mergers and consolidations pose new challenges for accountability and transparency, along with potential changes in the regulatory environment.
The number of local unions is decreasing and intermediate structures are growing in size and complexity. National unions need to monitor all of their affiliates; provide timely, targeted training and support to them; and develop and disseminate best practices through traditional educational opportunities as well as mentoring, podcasting, and video training.
Where do you see room for growth over the next year?
Parent unions can become more proactive in building databases and tracking systems. This will ensure that all affiliates timely and accurately file all required Department of Labor forms as well as improve record keeping and internal control practices.
What is the key takeaway that attendees will get from your presentation?
Attendees will gain access to templates for building databases and tracking systems, learn ways to develop traditional and non-traditional training, and discover information regarding best practices for improved record keeping, reporting, and internal controls.
