A Day in the Life at Calibre CPA Group-
Justin Sargent, Senior Compliance Manager
What is your title? Describe what you do.
I am a Senior Manager in the Compliance department. I’m responsible for overseeing multiple payroll audit programs. Daily, I review and approve audit findings and work with staff, clients, and employers to facilitate the completion of payroll audits.
Why did you get into the accounting/audit industry?
I started with Calibre directly out of college and was initially drawn to the travel part of the job. I also enjoy the investigating aspect of auditing.
What are three things you do every day? Do you have any morning “rituals”?
Coffee, check emails, then try to complete the most challenging task I need to get done for the day first.
What are the most challenging and rewarding parts of your job?
The most challenging part is dealing with angry individuals. Believe it or not, not everyone welcomes outside auditors. The most rewarding part is working with the people in our department. Also, knowing I’ve helped make sure someone’s pension they are counting on and entitled to according to their CBA will be there when they retire.
What advice would you give to someone looking to pursue a role like yours? Are there specific character traits or skills/certifications they should possess?
Strong analytical skills. Payroll audits aren’t as cut and paste as people think, there are a lot of variables, and each audit is different. Communication is also very important. Outside of our clients, we deal with new people everyday everyone from blue color workers up to CEO’s and attorneys for large corporations.
What do you like best about Calibre?
The people. I’ve enjoyed my time at Calibre and have made many friendships over the years.
