A Day in the Life – Elizabeth, Partner

A Day in the Life at Calibre CPA Group-

Elizabeth, Partner

What is your title? Describe what you do.

As an audit partner, I direct and oversee comprehensive audit and tax services for a wide range of tax-exempt clients. My primary responsibilities include leading the engagements and managing a team of professionals committed to delivering audit services that not only meet the highest standards but also contribute to the success and sustainability of our clients. A key aspect of my role is maintaining continuous communication with our clients throughout the year, ensuring they receive timely updates and proactive advice to navigate their unique financial landscapes.

In addition to my client-focused duties, I handle a broad range of firm administration responsibilities. These include scheduling and coordinating firm resources, recruiting top-tier talent, and actively participating in our Accounting and Auditing (A&A) Committee. In this capacity, I help steer the strategic direction and continual enhancement of our audit practices. I am also deeply passionate about pioneering AI initiatives within our firm to enhance both the efficiency and efficacy of our auditing processes.

Why did you get into the accounting/audit industry?

My journey into the accounting and audit industry began in high school when I first took an accounting class. I had always had a strong affinity for numbers and felt like accounting really clicked for me, so choosing to major in accounting in college felt like a natural decision. It offered a clear path to blend my skills and interests into a profession that was both demanding and rewarding. Today, as an Audit Partner, I continue to appreciate the dynamic nature of this field—no two days are alike, and the constant evolution of the industry and technology keeps me continually engaged and learning.

What are three things you do every day? Do you have any morning “rituals”?

Prioritize the Day: Every morning I take time to re-prioritize my “to-do” list based on urgency and importance and set clear objectives for what I want to accomplish that day. This helps me in managing my time effectively and ensuring that I stay on track with both short-term responsibilities and long-term project.

Set Clear Boundaries and Expectations: Before the day gets going, I make sure I review my schedule and distinguish between work hours and family time. I have two young boys, so this helps me set expectations both at work and with my family at home ensuring that I manage my professional responsibilities efficiently while preserving dedicated time for family activities.

Incorporate Exercise or Outdoor Activity: Each day, I carve out 20-30 minutes for physical activity, whether it’s a brisk walk, a quick workout, or a session of jogging or stretching. Prioritizing regular exercise is crucial for me; it not only elevates my energy levels but also sharpens my mental focus and enhances my overall well-being. Engaging in these activities helps me manage the stresses and demands of both work and family life more effectively.

What are the most challenging and rewarding parts of your job?

As a partner, my role involves a complex blend of responsibilities that are both challenging and rewarding. Balancing the demands of being a technical expert, business developer, mentor, and leader requires effective time management and strategic prioritization. Despite the challenges, the opportunity to engage deeply in various aspects of the firm and to mentor younger staff and shape the firm’s future leaders are also some of the most fulfilling parts of my role. Additionally, the autonomy and flexibility I enjoy as a partner provide a better work-life balance than many other positions.

What advice would you give to someone looking to pursue a role like yours? Are there specific character traits or skills/certifications they should possess?

If you’re aspiring to become a partner, a crucial step is to pass the CPA exam as early as possible, as it becomes increasingly challenging to allocate study time as your professional responsibilities grow. Alongside this, actively seek out mentors within your firm. A good mentor can offer invaluable guidance, support, and growth opportunities helping you steer your career in the direction you want.

Developing resilience and adaptability is vital for success. These traits will help you handle stress, manage pressure, adapt to changes in the industry, and recover from challenges. Moreover, demonstrating initiative and forward-thinking leadership will help to set you apart.
