A Day in the Life – Tina, AFS Manager

A Day in the Life at Calibre CPA Group-

Tina Hu, AFS Manager

What is your title? Describe what you do.

I am the manager in the Accounting and Financial Service Department at Calibre CPA Group. I am involved in administering and overseeing multiple client engagements, providing them with comprehensive accounting and financial services. I support clients in various aspects of their financial management, assisting them in achieving their mission and enhancing their business operations.

As a manager, I also supervise and mentor the staff on the engagements. I provide guidance, support, and training to ensure their professional growth and development. Additionally, I take on the responsibility of reviewing their work, ensuring accuracy, quality, and adherence to established procedures and standards.

Why did you get into the accounting/audit industry?

My aunt had a positive experience working in corporate accounting and influenced me to choose accounting as my career. Indeed, accounting plays a vital role in organizations by providing essential financial information and analysis that enables the leadership team to make informed business decisions.

What are three things you do every day? Do you have any morning “rituals”?

There are three things I do every day. They are essential for managing my responsibilities effectively:

Checking and responding to emails: This helps me to stay updated on any urgent or important requests from clients or colleagues. By promptly addressing these emails, I ensure timely communication and maintain efficient workflow.

Creating a to-do list and prioritizing tasks: This practice is crucial for organizing my workload. By identifying and listing my tasks, I gain clarity on what needs to be accomplished. Prioritizing tasks based on importance and deadlines help me to focus on the most critical assignments and ensure their timely completion.

Checking in with clients and team staff: Regular communication with clients helps build strong relationships and ensures their needs and expectations are met. Staying in touch with the team staff keeps me updated on the work status and allows me to provide guidance, offer support, and address any questions or challenges they may have.

My morning “rituals” are drinking a cup of coffee and starting the day with a full level of energy. This can help boost my focus and productivity as I tackle my tasks and engage with clients and colleagues.

What are the most challenging and rewarding parts of your job?

Managing multiple clients is sometimes challenging, especially when all my clients set tight deadlines on tasks/projects. The ability to allocate time wisely and work effectively and efficiently becomes crucial in such situations. By carefully prioritizing tasks, managing resources, and optimizing productivity, I can navigate these challenges successfully.

The feeling of reward comes when my clients express their satisfaction with the services provided by our team. Client satisfaction is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and expertise demonstrated by us. Building strong client relationships and exceeding their expectations not only contributes to the success of the engagements but also fosters long-term loyalty and trust.

What advice would you give to someone looking to pursue a role like yours? Are there specific character traits or skills/certifications they should possess?

Working at a public accounting firm is known to be both demanding and rewarding. It offers continuous opportunities for learning and growth, provided you have the willingness to embrace them. Each day presents new learning experiences, allowing you to expand your knowledge and skillset.

To succeed in this field, it is essential to possess strong technical and time management skills. The nature of the work requires precision and attention to detail, making it crucial to be meticulous in your approach. Additionally, excellent communication and interpersonal skills are vital, as you will often collaborate with clients and colleagues, and effectively conveying complex information is essential.
