Alp A. Atabek, AIF, CPA*, grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland. In 1984, after graduating from Catholic University, Alp passed the CPA exam and opened his own firm focused on tax preparation and small business accounting. Subletting office space from a prominent Bethesda financial planning firm was a decision that dramatically impacted his career. He enjoyed the financial planning environment so much that in 1988, Alp began offering his clients financial planning and investment management services to complement his tax and accounting practice.
In 2000, he sold his CPA practice to focus 100% of his efforts on helping clients with their financial planning and investment management needs. With his tax practice, Alp felt like he was always working on his clients’ pasts, whereas through his financial and investment planning services, he feels he is able to help plan people’s futures and really make an impact in their lives. Over the course of 30+ years in the industry, he has developed lasting partnerships with clients centered on a shared focus of helping them achieve their life goals. He often enjoys reflecting with clients on how he helped them open their first IRAs in the 1980s, to now helping them put the final touches on their retirement plans.
Outside of the office, his favorite pastime is spending time with his high school sweetheart and wife, Karen, and their two adult daughters, Natalie and Casey, along with their yorkies.
Alp A. Atabek has been proud to be recognized as a Chairman’s Level advisor since 2017—a distinction attained by just over 3 percent of advisors affiliated with Commonwealth Financial Network, the broker-dealer that helps AFS process investment transactions on behalf of its clients.
