James is the firm’s Managing Partner. He has been in public accounting since 1998 and brings years of invaluable experience and leadership within the firm. This position is a natural progression in his career, reflecting his expertise and alignment with the firm’s core values and strategic goals. James oversees the operations and strategic direction of the firm. His focus is also on supporting partners and staff, and ensuring clients receive the highest standard of service.

James  has significant experience with not-for-profit organizations including labor unions, trade and professional associations, charitable organizations, foundations, advocacy groups and employee benefit funds. James serves as the North American Chair of Morison Global, an association the firm is affiliated with. He also serves on Morison’s International Board of Directors.

Audit and Accounting Update (12:10 pm - 12:45 pm)

Presented by: Jesse C Sargent | Principal

Jesse is a Principal in the audit and accounting department of Calibre CPA Group. He has been in public accounting since 2010. Jesse has significant public accounting experience in the specialized field of tax-exempt organizations including nonprofits, charitable entities, trade and professional associations, labor unions, employee benefit plans, and others.  He is responsible for all aspects of client service and engagement management including engagement budgeting, supervision of staff personnel, preparation of financial statements, tax filings, and informational returns. In addition to his client responsibilities, Jesse frequently assists with on-boarding of new employees/interns and facilitates continuing training and education programs for staff auditors. He is also a member of the firm’s Audit and Accounting Committee and has been instrumental in development of Calibre’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

James is an Audit partner at Calibre CPA Group and has been in public accounting since 2011. James has a wealth of experience providing audit and accounting services for the employee benefit plan and tax-exempt community. He has concentrated his career on single and multiemployer benefit funds, labor unions, associations, foundations, charitable organizations, and other exempt entities. James is a specialist in the firm’s Employee Benefit Plan practice, with expertise in a wide variety of plans including defined benefit, defined contribution, 401(k), pension, health and welfare, annuity, and other funds.

Guest Speaker: Key Campaign Finance and Related Tax Laws for Unions During Election 2024

Laurence is a partner at Trister, Ross, Schadler & Gold, PLLC. He principally represents labor, political, advocacy and charitable organizations, political services providers and activists so they can succeed in the political, legislative and policy arenas. Mr. Gold focuses on federal and state campaign finance, election, lobbying, tax, labor, ethics, and general nonprofit law.

Mr. Gold litigates cases, provides advice and counsel, prepares amicus curiae briefs, and conducts legal trainings for political, lobbying and accounting staff. He frequently helps new organizations get off the ground and then works closely with them in every legal aspect of their operations. Mr. Gold defends clients facing complaints, investigations and audits before the Federal Election Commission, state election agencies and the Internal Revenue Service. He also participates in their regulatory, advisory opinion and other proceedings.

Brian is the Director of Information Technology at Calibre CPA Group, where he has played a key role in advancing the firm’s technology initiatives since 2005. Holding a Bachelor’s in Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Master’s in Business Information Technology from DePaul University, Brian effectively merges his technical expertise with his business acumen. His dedication to implementing cutting-edge IT solutions has been pivotal in optimizing firm operations and driving technological progress. Currently, he manages all aspects of the firm’s security, software, and support.

Tax Update (2:25 pm - 2:45 pm)

Presented by: Kristin A. Jacquelin, CPA | Director

Kristin is a director in the tax department of Calibre CPA Group.  She has been in public accounting since 2007. Kristin has focused her career on audit procedures and regulatory tax requirements for labor unions, employee benefit funds, associations and not-for-profit organizations. In addition to working with other team members to establish and streamline processes and procedures in the firm’s programs, Kristin’s responsibilities include all tax aspects of engagement performance, including planning, supervising, and completing any necessary tax/informational returns. In addition, Kristin performs various other services for clients on an as needed basis.
